MODALITY

EMDR, for memories that still run the show.

Zandria Hooks, LCSW is EMDR trained and uses it with adults whose trauma keeps showing up in the present. Fully telehealth for clients located in Texas, Maryland or Massachusetts.

What EMDR actually is

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured, phase-based therapy developed for post-traumatic stress. The core idea is that some memories do not get filed away the way ordinary memories do. They stay raw. A smell, a tone of voice, a set of brake lights, and the body responds as though the event is happening again, even when you know full well that it is over.

In EMDR you hold a piece of that memory in mind while doing something called bilateral stimulation, which in a telehealth session usually means following a moving point on your screen or tapping alternately on your knees or shoulders. That dual attention appears to let the brain reprocess the memory so it settles into the past where it belongs. The event does not disappear. What changes is the charge it carries and the beliefs that came attached to it.

The eight phases, plainly

EMDR is not a single technique applied at random. It follows eight phases. The first two are history taking and preparation: we map what you are carrying, agree on targets, and build stabilisation skills so you have somewhere to land before we go anywhere difficult. Phases three through six are assessment, desensitisation, installation and body scan, where the reprocessing happens and a more accurate belief about yourself takes hold. Phase seven closes each session so you leave regulated rather than cracked open. Phase eight re-evaluates at the start of the next session to see what actually shifted.

The preparation phase matters more than people expect. Plenty of clients spend several sessions there, and that is not a delay in the work, it is the work. Nobody gets pushed into reprocessing before they have the resources to handle it.

Why EMDR suits people who do not want to talk about it

A common relief for service members, veterans and first responders: EMDR does not require you to narrate the event in detail. You do not have to describe what you saw at the scene, or recount a deployment story out loud, in order for the processing to work. You need to be able to bring the memory to mind. That is a different demand than telling it, and for people who have spent years avoiding the telling, it can be the difference between starting therapy and not.

Does it work over telehealth

Yes, when the setup is right. Sessions run over a secure video platform, and bilateral stimulation is delivered on screen or through self-tapping that you control. What matters is a private room, a stable connection, headphones, and about fifteen minutes of buffer after the session before you have to be a functioning person again. We will talk through your setup in the first session and adjust it as we go.

Zandria is EMDR trained and CPT certified. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed in Texas (#107245), Maryland and Massachusetts. Sessions are telehealth only, and you need to be physically located in one of those three states at the time of your appointment.

Who tends to be a good fit

Adults dealing with single-incident trauma such as a car accident, and adults carrying repeated or cumulative trauma from military service, emergency response or earlier life. It is often used alongside skills work for the anxiety, insomnia and avoidance that trauma leaves behind. EMDR is not a fit for everyone or for every presentation, and part of the free consult is working out honestly whether it is the right tool for what you are dealing with. If another approach fits better, we will say so, and if the right care is outside this practice, you will get a referral rather than a runaround.

What it costs and how to start

Individual telehealth sessions are $150 for private pay. Insurance and EAP are accepted, including Military OneSource and CuraLinc. The simplest first step is a free 15-minute consult where you can ask about EMDR directly and decide without any pressure.

You can also compare approaches before you choose. Read about Cognitive Processing Therapy, which Zandria is certified in, or CBT for anxiety, depression and sleep. If you already know you want to begin, the first session page walks through exactly what happens, and the contact page will get a message to Zandria directly.
