## What MST refers to

Military sexual trauma is the term used for sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment experienced during military service. It is not a diagnosis. It describes an experience, and the effects of it vary enormously from person to person. It happens to service members of every gender, rank and branch.

What often makes it distinct from other trauma is the context. The environment where it happened was also your workplace, your housing, your chain of command and your community. Reporting may have meant going through people who knew the person involved. Leaving was not an option available to you. That combination, harm plus a system you could not step away from, is why betrayal is so often part of the picture.

## How it can show up later

Post-traumatic stress symptoms including intrusive memories, avoidance, and being permanently on alert. Difficulty with trust, particularly around authority or institutions. Anxiety and depression. Sleep problems. Shame that has attached itself to your sense of who you are rather than to what was done. Complicated feelings about your service, sometimes pride and anger occupying the same space. Some people notice effects immediately and some notice them years later, often when something apparently unrelated brings it forward. Both are ordinary.

## How therapy works here

The first principle is control. Trauma of this kind involves having choice taken away, so the work is built to hand choice back. You decide what to talk about and when. You can say a topic is off limits for now. Early sessions focus on stabilization and skills before anything else, and nothing about the pace is imposed on you.

Zandria Hooks, LCSW is EMDR trained and CPT certified, and both approaches are used for this kind of trauma. EMDR does not require you to describe the event in detail, which for many people is the deciding factor in starting at all. CPT works on the beliefs that came afterward, especially self-blame and the sense that your judgment cannot be trusted, using a structured method rather than reassurance. Where anxiety, sleep or depression are the pressing problem, CBT-based work addresses those directly. You will not be pushed into trauma processing before you and Zandria agree you are ready.

## What is not required of you

You do not need to have reported. You do not need documentation, a VA rating or any official recognition of what happened to receive care here. You do not need to have a clear or complete memory of events. You do not need to justify why you did not do something differently at the time. And you are not required to tell the story in the first session, or in any session, in order for the therapy to be useful.

Zandria is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, licensed in Texas (#107245), Maryland and Massachusetts, prior active duty and currently serving in the National Guard. Sessions are telehealth only, for clients physically located in one of those three states at the time of the appointment. $150 per session for private pay, with insurance and EAP accepted including Military OneSource and CuraLinc.

## Other options worth knowing about

Veterans may be eligible for MST-related care through the VA regardless of discharge status or service-connection, and it is worth asking about even if you also work with a private provider. If a different provider or level of care would serve you better than this practice, you will be told that honestly and pointed toward it.

## If you want to begin

A free 15-minute consult is a low-commitment way to hear a voice, ask questions and decide nothing yet. [Send a message](/contact), read [about the first session](/first-session), or book on Headway when it feels right.
