## Station life is its own world

Firefighters live together for a third of their lives. You cook together, sleep in the same building, give each other a hard time and trust each other with your lives. That closeness is one of the best parts of the job. It can also make it harder to admit when something is off, because the crew is family, and nobody wants to be the one the family worries about.

Much of what firefighters face is shared with other responders, and the first responder page (https://ravencounselingservices.org/first-responder-therapy) covers that ground. This page is about what fire service adds on top.

## The weight is in the total, not one call

The public pictures a firefighter in front of a burning building. The actual job is also medical calls, fatal wrecks, overdoses, suicides, children, people you could not reach in time. Any one of them might be manageable. Stacked up over years, they build a weight that can show up sideways, as irritability, drinking more, pulling away, or feeling flat about things you used to enjoy.

That flatness sometimes looks like depression (https://ravencounselingservices.org/depression-therapy) more than trauma, and often it is some of both. Therapy starts by sorting out what is actually going on rather than assuming.

## Sleep that answers to the tones

When you sleep at the station, a part of your brain stays listening for the alarm. Many firefighters find that part never fully goes quiet, even at home on days off. You wake at the hour calls usually come in, or you lie awake running through the last shift. Over a career, that broken pattern adds up. Sleep is often one of the first things addressed in therapy, because almost everything else is harder when you are running on fragments.

## The culture of handling it

Dark humor, a few beers after a bad one, and an unwritten rule that you do not bring it up. Those habits help crews get through hard calls together, and they are not the enemy. The problem is when they become the only tools. Some calls do not get fixed by a joke at the kitchen table. Therapy is not a replacement for your crew. It is a place for the part that does not fit at the kitchen table.

## Working through what the calls left behind

Cognitive Processing Therapy (https://ravencounselingservices.org/cognitive-processing-therapy) focuses on the beliefs a call can leave behind, like "I should have gotten there faster" or "if I let myself feel this I won't be able to do the job." It looks at those thoughts closely and asks whether they are accurate. EMDR (https://ravencounselingservices.org/emdr-therapy) can help with specific scenes that keep coming back. CBT (https://ravencounselingservices.org/cognitive-behavioral-therapy) gives practical tools for sleep, stress and anger in the middle of a real week. Zandria Hooks, LCSW, is CPT certified and EMDR trained.

## The people waiting on the other side of the shift

Partners and kids live with the schedule too: holidays at the station, the gap after a long shift before you are really home, the stories you do not tell. Many firefighters protect their families by saying nothing, and the families feel the distance anyway. Part of the work can be figuring out what to share, how to come home more fully, and how to rest without guilt on your days off.

Telehealth only, 50-minute sessions, evenings available. You must be physically located in Texas, Maryland or Massachusetts at the time of each session.

## Questions firefighters ask first

### I have not had one terrible call. Is therapy still for me?

Yes. Cumulative exposure is one of the most common reasons firefighters reach out. You do not need a single defining incident to have something worth working on.

### Is this connected to my department or peer support team?

No. This is an independent private practice. Peer support and department programs can be valuable, and therapy here is a separate, private option alongside them.

### Can I schedule around a 24-hour shift rotation?

Sessions are 50 minutes by video, by appointment, with evenings available. Your rotation can be discussed at the free consult to find a consistent time.

### Can my partner be part of this?

Sessions here are individual therapy for adults. Talking through what the job does at home is part of that work, and if joint help is needed, that can be discussed.

For coverage, see insurance and EAP (https://ravencounselingservices.org/insurance-eap). To talk first, request a free 15-minute consult on the contact page (https://ravencounselingservices.org/contact).
